FBI: Sibling suspects caught in Colorado
pueblo, colo.
Three fugitive siblings accused of shooting at police in Florida and robbing a bank in Georgia were captured Wednesday in Colorado after crashing their car into a highway barrier during a high-speed chase.
Ryan Edward Dougherty, 21; Dylan Dougherty Stanley, 26; and Lee Grace Dougherty, 29, were targets of a nationwide search after they were accused of the crime spree.
Lee Dougherty was shot in the leg after the crash when she pointed a gun at an officer, authorities said.
All three suspects were being treated for injuries at a hospital before being transferred to Pueblo County Jail.
Evaluation shows suspect has disorder
new york
A man charged with killing and dismembering an 8-year-old boy is confused and apathetic, a “practically blank” personality whose younger sister died while institutionalized with schizophrenia, according to a psychiatric evaluation obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press.
The court-ordered evaluation of Levi Aron found him fit to stand trial on murder charges in the death of Leiby Kletzky.
Details in the report from a psychiatrist and psychologist at Kings County Hospital show the 35-year-old suspect is deeply troubled, and has given authorities conflicting accounts of his life and his mental and physical history.
NASA rover reaches rim of Mars crater
los angeles
NASA’s surviving Mars rover Opportunity has reached the rim of a 14-mile-wide crater where the robot geologist will examine rocks older than any it has seen in its seven years on the surface of the red planet, scientists said Wednesday.
The solar-powered, six-wheel rover arrived at Endeavour crater after driving 13 miles from a smaller crater named Victoria.
The drive, which took nearly three years, culminated Tuesday, when Opportunity signaled it had arrived at the location dubbed Spirit Point in honor of the rover’s twin, which fell silent last year.
Police: Norway attacker worked solo
oslo, norway
Police investigating the attacks that last month killed 77 people in Norway were becoming “more convinced” the assailant acted alone, a prosecutor said Wednesday.
“Each day, we are more convinced that he carried out this alone,” prosecutor Christian Hatlo told a news conference.
Hatlo was speaking the day after investigators conducted a 10-hour interview with Anders Behring Breivik, who has admitted the July 22 attacks.
Recent interviews with Breivik have focused on how the attacks were planned and carried out, Hatlo said.
Palestinians plan for calm protests
ramallah, west bank
Palestinian leaders have drawn up a plan to keep their rallies in September peaceful, officials said Wednesday, hoping that violence-free demonstrations would boost their drive for a U.N. recognition.
The rallies, set for Palestinian territories and abroad, are to coincide with a hoped-for U.N. endorsement of a Palestinian state. Palestinians adopted the U.N. recognition tactic out of loss of faith in peace talks with Israel.
Those negotiations have been frozen for most of the past three years and there is no sign the two sides can agree on conditions to resume them.
