MINERAL RIDGE
Weathersfield Township has begun the $146,544 Seaborn Street Safety upgrade project, Trustee James Stoddard said Tuesday.
The project started Monday and is scheduled to take approximately one month to complete.
The township received a $123,097 Ohio Public Works Commission grant for the project to pay about 84 percent of the cost. The township will pay the rest, approximately $23,447. Foust Construction of Girard is the general contractor.
Work to be done includes improving drainage, curbs and widening and paving. The street runs off of state Route 46 past the high school.
The township road crews replaced a major drainage pipe in the 900 block of Ohltown-Girard Road (also known as Webb Road) in late July.
Trustees honored 36-year veteran fire department member William Thompson, a lieutenant with the Mineral Ridge Fire Department, on his retirement. A proclamation recognizing him and thanking him for his service was approved and presented to Thompson, 55, by Stoddard at a reception given by the fire department at Mineral Ridge Fire station.
Thompson joined the fire department in 1976, and was promoted to lieutenant in 1985.
He continued in that post when the Mineral Ridge and McKinley Heights Fire Department were merged in 1999.
He and his wife, Kimberly are township residents and have two sons.
Thompson said he has enjoyed retirement from the volunteer department, especially since, “I don’t have to worry about the pager going off in the middle of the night.”
