U.S. Rep. Rob Portman of Ohio named to deficit-reduction committee


WASHINGTON — Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has named freshmen U.S. Sens. Rob Portman of R-Ohio, and Pat Toomey, R-Pa., to the powerful new committee that will try to come up with a bipartisan plan this fall to reduce the federal budget deficit by more than $1 trillion.

McConnell also selected Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona.

GOP House Speaker John Boehner named Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, as committee co-chairman.

Boehner also named Reps. Dave Camp and Fred Upton, both of Michigan, to the committee.
