Two corrections officers at the Trumbull Correctional Institution were injured Monday when they were assaulted by an inmate who they believed had contraband.

Warden Bennie D. Kelly said the incident occurred about 7:55 a.m. and left the two officers with minor injuries.

The officers were treated at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, Kelly said.

He noted that the officers were not taken by ambulance to the hospital.

“It appears as though an officer was hurt doing their job. An inmate appeared to have contraband, and the officer went to check,” Kelly said.

The officer was attacked, and another officer came to assist the first, Kelly said.

The inmate was subdued and placed on a security watch, he added.

“Those things can happen,” Kelly said. “... It’s not common, but those things can happen. It’s a possibility, which is why we have procedures in place.”

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the assault and a patrol investigator said more information would be available today.

In December, two corrections officers at the prison were injured when they were attacked by two inmates. In that case, the officers were trying to break up a fight in the prison yard, and other corrections officers helped subdue the inmates.
