1842: The United States and Canada resolve a border dispute by signing the Webster-Ashburton Treaty.
1854: Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden,” which describes Thoreau’s experiences while living near Walden Pond in Massachusetts, is first published.
1902: Edward VII is crowned king of Britain following the death of his mother, Queen Victoria.
1910: The U.S. Patent Office grants Alva J. Fisher of the Hurley Machine Co. a patent for an electrically powered washing machine.
1936: Jesse Owens wins his fourth gold medal at the Berlin Olympics as the United States takes first place in the 400-meter relay.

1986: Youngstown State University’s board of trustees ratify a three-year pact with members of the YSU/Ohio Education Association that provides three yearly pay raises of 8 percent each for 410 faculty members.
Youngstown City Council approves a three-year contract with 200 members of the Fraternal Order of Police that provides pay raises of 6 percent each year, but also requires officers to pay up to $800 a year in deductibles for family health coverage or join a health maintenance organization.
Youngstown State University will apply for membership in the Association of Mid-Continent Universities for basketball after dropping out of the Ohio Valley Conference. YSU was the last Ohio school left in that conference.
1971: Ohio Bell files a rate increase request that would cost Youngstown area residents $2.40 per month for private phone lines and $1.90 for party lines.
Four people are arrested and charged with violating the Pennsylvania Drug Device and Cosmetic act after two off-duty Mercer County policemen hunting groundhogs sight a field of marijuana plants in Hickory Township.
Ground is broken for a new $250,000 Goodyear Service Center on E. Front Street between Champion and Walnut streets.
G. Taylor Evans Jr., operator of the University Book & Supply Store at 113 Lincoln Ave., says his store has 10,000 volumes, but he tells The Vindicator’s Esther Hamilton that he’s too busy running the store to read more than one or two a month.
1961: Youngstown will join Cleveland and other cities in fighting a proposed 24 percent increase for the East Ohio Gas Co. when it comes before the Public Utilities commission.
The executive committee of the Mahoning County Medical Society announces plans for a mass immunization program using the Sabin oral polio vaccine when it becomes available.
By a vote of 6-1, Youngs-town City Council votes to place a $9 million bond issue on the November ballot to match state and federal funds in a $27 million highway program.
1936: Mayor Lionel Evans says he will not issue permits for fireworks displays in the city, including those at Idora Park, which have sparked protests from neighboring residents.
A group of Republicans and Democrats is seeking repeal of Youngstown’s city charter in the belief that the parties would have more influence in politics without a charter.
Dogs, cats, turtles, goats, ponies and other pets will be on display at the second annual pet parade of the South Side Merchants & Civic Association.
