The famous fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin came to life for area children as they attended a puppet show at the Canfield library on July 26.
The show was a part of the library’s Summer Reading program, a series of activities and shows during the summer that all have to do with a theme. This year, the theme was “One World, Many Stories.”
Sixty kids came to watch the classic story about the miller who tells the king that his daughter can spin straw into gold. The king forces the miller’s daughter to do so, but what he doesn’t realize is that a small creature by the name of Rumpelstiltskin is doing the work for her and that the girl has promised him her firstborn child in return.
The show was a hit with the kids, who giggled and clapped when it was over.
“I liked all the parts,” said Scottie Eaton, who went to the show with his mom, Sabrina. “It was fun.”
Children also got to make a craft afterward, a paper puppet of Rumpelstiltskin.
Canfield’s children’s librarians Jane Adams and Jan Luoma put on the show. Each year, they select a skit to perform for the kids.
“I think we enjoyed doing it as much as the kids enjoyed seeing it,” said Adams, “It’s something old-fashioned that they like to be a part of.”
The puppet show was the second-to-last event of the library’s summer program. The final Mexican Fiesta will take place on Aug. 9 at 10 a.m.
