Police: Someone fired at Ohio medical helicopter

MARYSVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say a bullet hole was discovered in a medical helicopter during a refueling while making flights to children’s hospitals.

Union County Sheriff Jamie Patton tells The Columbus Dispatch authorities believe the MedFlight helicopter was fired upon from the ground sometime between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. Thursday. No one was hurt.

The crew flew to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus and Akron Children’s Hospital. MedFlight spokesman Todd Bailey says a bullet hole was found in a rear door during refueling in Akron. Patton says a bullet fragment was found in a storage compartment.

MedFlight President and Chief Executive Rod Crane tells WCMH-TV three people likely were on board.

Bailey says the aircraft, based in central Ohio, has been replaced as the sheriff’s office investigates.
