The Performing Arts Center relocates to Canfield
The Performing Arts Center is relocating to Canfield. PAC, a competitive studio turning out numerous professional dancers, teachers and choreographers, is moving to its new location at 4478 Boardman-Canfield Rd. Suite C.
The center is going on 28 years of teaching the most innovative, up-to-date styles of dance. They also offer the instruction in voice and piano.

Canfield couple announces birth of granddaughter
Kristy and Len Fill of Canfield are celebrating the birth of granddaughter McKenna Sloane Bise on July 22, whose parents are Heather and Justin Bise of Dublin, Ohio. The other set of grandparents are Brenda and Bill Bise of Phoenix, Ariz.
Great grandparents are Evelyn and Ted Myers of Girard, Irene Fill of Sharpsville, Pa., and Betty DePue of Mansfield.
Canfield native magna cum laude at John Carroll
Amanda Hardy, Canfield Class of 2007, graduated from John Carroll University, magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. She will pursue her master’s in Anesthesia at Case Western Reserve University. She is the daughter of David and Traci Hardy.
Canfield grad studies at Cambridge
Alexa Lee Arndt, Canfield Class of 2009, is spending the summer studying abroad at the University of Cambridge, in the United Kingdom. As a student of the Pembroke-Kings Programme, she is living at Kings College and attending challenging classes.
The experience is enhanced by formal dinners and Plenary Lectures.
Upon arrival in London, Arndt spent a three-day orientation, learning about the program and seeing the sights. The students are encouraged to travel on the weekend, and she has already spent one weekend in Scotland, and another at the University of Oxford. Trips to Bath, Stonehenge, Paris, Bloomsbury and Dublin are already on her calendar.
She is the daughter of Lisa Lee Kohler, Canfield, and James Arndt, Austintown.
Canfield grad on dean’s list at Kent State University
Kaitlin Crowe, Canfield Class of 2007, was named to the dean’s list at Kent State University for the Spring 2011 semester with a GPA 3.625. Crowe is a student in the College of Education, Health and Human Services and is active in the programs “Student Success” and “Destination Kent State.” She is the daughter of Chris and Sue Crowe of Canfield.
Class of 1981 reunion
Liberty High School Class of 1981 will hold its 30th reunion in August with a two-day event. On Aug. 26 at 6 p.m., alumni and families will tour the new LHS building, attend the opening night of football season, be recognized at halftime and attend a mixer at Station Square Restaurant on Belmont Ave.
On Aug. 27, the reunion dinner will be served at The Metroplex. Costs are $15/person for Friday and $45/person for Saturday. Reservations are requested by Aug. 13.

American Business Women’s Association meets Aug. 9
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host a meeting Aug. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in Canfield at A La Cart. The new board members will lead the meeting to begin their new year. The three scholarship students will also be in attendance and entertainment for the evening will be a children’s choir named ROCcK Children’s Choir. Get your lucky suit cleaned for free
Youngstown-based LaFrance Cleaners is introducing a program that will help unemployed individuals in the Mahoning Valley make a good first impression at their next job interview. The program called ‘Fresh Start’ allows area residents to have clothing they will wear when seeking employment dry-cleaned for free.
“Any businessperson will tell you that an applicant’s appearance is important when making a hiring decision,” said LaFrance president Stephen Weiss. “These days people need every possible advantage in order to land a job.”
The ‘Fresh Start’ program will run through the end of August. Individuals who wish to participate must bring in proof of unemployment and identification. The free service is limited to one outfit per participant and includes a shirt or blouse, slacks, dress or a skirt and suit coat or blazer.
LaFrance Cleaners has locations in Boardman, Canfield, Poland, Liberty and Youngstown, as well as free pick-up and delivery service to homes and offices throughout the Mahoning Valley.
Local personal trainer publishes book
Mark Russo, a personal trainer and owner of Fantastic Fitness, Inc., in Boardman has published an ebook which is currently available on Amazon.com.
The book, “Creating a Dynamite Body” describes the details of Russo’s approach to fitness. His five-tier system combines diet, aerobics, weight training, stretching and rest for best results. The program, which Russo developed during his 20-year career as a weight training enthusiast and personal trainer, is described in detail in his eBook.
Photos show specifics of each stretch and weight training exercise emphasizing correct form to minimize injury, the main culprit in derailing a fitness program. The program has been very successful for athletes and everyday folks who need to minimize gym time due to busy schedules.
Garden club hosts horticultural show
The Men’s Garden Club of Youngstown will host its 47th annual horticultural show Aug. 27-28 at Fellows Riverside Gardens. This show is free and open to the public.
Entries may be submitted by young and old alike on Aug. 27 from 7 to 10:30 a.m. Awards will be presented Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. Flowers and/or veggies may be entered. A special cash prize will be awarded for the heaviest tomato.

Canfield natives part of play in Salem
Several Canfield residents will be part of the cast and crew of “Fiddler on the Roof” when it is presented at the Salem Community Theatre Aug. today-14.

Grocery stores help Wounded Warriors
Three local Nemenz IGA’s will participate in a national cause marketing initiative to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project.
Locations include 2980 McCartney Road, Youngstown; 8 N. Broad St., Canfield; and 655 Creed St., Struthers.
During this national promotion, through Sept. 5, IGA will donate 10 cents from the sale of every specially-marked case of IGA brand water to Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded soldiers.

Church to host outdoor movie nights
Canfield Christian Church is hosting a series of movie nights throughout the next several months.
The scheduled movies and dates are: “The Chronicles of Narnia” (Aug. 19), “Secretariat” (Sept. 16), “The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry” (Oct. 21).

2009 Canfield alum makes Dean’s List at Ohio University
Kendron Taylor has been named to the Dean’s List at Ohio University for the spring quarter. She is a communications major and a 2009 graduate of Canfield High School.
She is the daughter of Tarence and Gia Taylor and the granddaughter of Joseph and Barbera Caruso and Margaret Taylor.

Local student chosen for internship
Daniel Jenkins, a Canfield High School student, has been accepted into the Cleveland Clinic Pharmacy internship program. The internship is offered through the Civic Education Initiatives Office at the Cleveland Clinic.
The application and interview process required academic recommendations, written tests and personal interviews. Jenkins is one of 134 students out of 600 applicants who will participate in the program this summer.
Jenkins wants to pursue a degree in pharmaceutical sciences and become a pharmacist. He is the son of Danny and Kim Jenkins and will be a senior at CHS this fall.
Student earns high honors
Joy Jakubek, a sophomore in the Mylan School of Pharmacy, has been named to the spring dean’s list at Duquesne University.
The dean’s list recognizes full-time students who have maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average on a scale of 4.0, with no grade lower than a “C”.
Jakubek is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. John and Paula Jakubek of Canfield.
Canfield alum earns high honors
Cadet William Fisher has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at the U.S. Military, at West Point.
Fisher graduated from Canfield High School in 2010 and will be commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army upon graduation at West Point. He will spend three weeks abroad completing his Advanced Individual Academic Development and four weeks at West Point for Cadet Field Training. Fisher is also member of the Army Football team and is the son of Becky and Sam Fisher of Canfield.
