1892: Andrew and Abby Borden are axed to death in their home in Fall River, Mass. Lizzie Borden, Andrew’s daughter from a previous marriage, is accused of the killings, but acquitted at trial.

1944: Fifteen-year-old diarist Anne Frank is arrested with her sister, parents and four others by the Gestapo after hiding for two years inside a building in Amsterdam. (Anne dies the following year at Bergen-Belsen.)

1977: President Jimmy Carter signs a measure establishing the Department of Energy.

1987: The Federal Communications Commission votes to abolish the Fairness Doctrine, which requires radio and television stations to present balanced coverage of controversial issues.

1986: Niles Mayor John P. Shaffer says he has no intention of filling seven openings on the city police force, including three captaincies, because of city finances.

1936: Trumbull County commissioners authorize County Engineer Royal H. Stilltoe to survey the proposed site of the tri-city airport just north of Vienna so that the project can be submitted to federal authorities for approval.

Jesse Owens, Ohio State Negro all-round star, wins the Olympic broad jump title in Berlin, following up his earlier triumph in the 100-yeard dash.

County commissioners will place an issue on the November ballot for $128,000 to buy voting machines.
