nfl roundup | News and notes

Rams: Former St. Louis quarterback Marc Bulger is retiring after 11 NFL seasons. Bulger was selected for the Pro Bowl twice and passed for 22,814 yards, 122 touchdowns and 93 interceptions. He passed for more than 3,800 yards three times, including a career-best 4,301 in 2006, the only season he played all 16 games. After parting with St. Louis after the 2009 season, he spent last year with the Ravens but did not play.

Vikings: Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier says he expects star running back Adrian Peterson to return to training camp on Friday following the birth of his son. Peterson practiced with the Vikings on Monday before heading home to Texas after his fiancee went into labor. Frazier said on Wednesday that he spoke with Peterson and was told that everything went well. The plan is for Peterson to be back at practice on Friday. Frazier also says he’s hoping that a new deal with linebacker Chad Greenway “will happen here soon.”

Patriots: After a summer of negotiating, training camp sounds pretty good to Matt Light right now. Light had a double load of stress during the lockout. He was the Patriots player representative and a free agent who couldn’t negotiate with New England or any other team during the stoppage. Light agreed to a two-year deal with the Patriots this week, ensuring he will be back protecting quarterback Tom Brady’s blind side at left tackle.

Cowboys: Dallas cornerback Terence Newman has an apparent groin injury. Newman got hurt during practice Wednesday, walking gingerly off the field after getting tangled with a receiver during pass coverage drills. It wasn’t immediately clear what the severity of the injury was.

Titans: Tennessee cornerback Ryan Mouton will have surgery to repair his right Achilles’ tendon, making him the second player to have his season ended by that injury since training camp opened. Mouton was hurt late in Tuesday night’s practice in what appeared to be an ankle injury. An MRI on Wednesday showed the severity of the injury. Rookie free agent receiver O.J. Murdock’s injured his Achilles on Sunday. Titans coach Mike Munchak says he doesn’t think the NFL lockout has anything to do with the injuries. Munchak notes both occurred with no contact. Mouton, going into his third season, had been expected to provide crucial depth in the secondary and has been a gunner on punt coverage.
