Man pleads guilty in beating
YOUNGSTOWN
A 21-year-old Youngstown man could face up to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to beating another man on the South Side in 2010.
Jermaine Moore, 21, of Philadelphia Avenue, had been indicted on robbery and felonious assault charges in connection with the beating on Winona Avenue in 2010.
He entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors Monday wherein he pleaded guilty to the felonious assault and prosecutors dropped the robbery charge.
The case is assigned to Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Moore, who is represented by Attorney Thomas Zena, is still facing aggravated robbery and carrying concealed weapons charges in another case where prosecutors say he robbed a pizza delivery man on the South Side in 2011.
He will be in court on those charges Nov. 7.
Robert Andrews, an assistant county prosecutor, said Moore was part of a group of individuals who beat and robbed a man of his shoes in the 2010 incident.
“He [Moore] basically beat him up, then other people joined in, several people were beating the victim. In the course of the victim being beaten up his high priced tennis shoes were also taken,” said Andrews.
Andrews said prosecutors will be asking the court to send Moore to prison, but there will be no set amount of time in the request.
In the other robbery case pending against Moore, police say a 26-year-old pizza delivery driver was making a delivery to an East Lucius address at 11:40 p.m. April 8 when he was met at the porch by a teenage boy asking if he could change a $100 bill to complete the transaction.
The driver told the man he could not make that much change and began to leave, but another man, believed to be Moore, came from the side of the house pulled out a handgun and ordered the driver to the ground.
The armed thief took the driver’s wallet, cash and cellphone.
The armed man and the teen then fled in the driver’s car.
Police spotted the car later. Both suspects got out of the car and ran through backyards.
They were caught and arrested after a short chase.
