Sheriff: Mom kills son, 8, then herself in Granville

GRANVILLE, Ohio

Investigators say they believe a woman shot and killed her 8-year-old son, then used the gun to take her own life.

Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp says in a statement that detectives learned 43-year-old Joyce Straight may have had ongoing mental-health issues that may have contributed to Saturday’s double shooting.

Thorp tells The Advocate newspaper of Newark that Straight’s husband left for work at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday and returned to their home in Granville around 1:15 to find the bodies of his wife and son Jeremy.
