Mayor Williams’ farewell address today at Covelli

YOUNGSTOWN

Outgoing Mayor Jay Williams will say goodbye to the city with a free event today at the Covelli Centre.

Today is Williams’ official last day as mayor. He is resigning to become the executive director of the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Recovery for Auto Communities and Workers, effective next Monday.

The “Thank You to the Community” event will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the city-owned facility at 229 E. Front St. downtown. Williams will give his goodbye speech about 5:30 p.m. He plans to express his gratitude to the community for his 51/2 years as mayor at the event.

The event is free and open to the public.

Fatal car crash

NEWTON falls

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a Sunday morning one-car crash that killed an 18-year-old Newton Falls man.

According to police, Zachary R. Brasko was driving a 2004 Ford Escape southwest on Ravenna Road about 7:55 a.m. Sunday when the vehicle crossed the center line and struck a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brasko was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Attempted robbery

Neshannock twp., pa.

A New Castle man is in police custody after an attempted robbery of a Neshannock Township pharmacy.

According to police, Eric Barbati, of East Wallace Avenue, New Castle, walked into the Medicine Shoppe on Wilmington Road on Tuesday carrying a firearm and demanding pills and cash.

The owner of the business and several customers were able to hold Barbati until police arrived.

The board of Mahoning County’s new land bank, which returns abandoned properties to productive use, is seeking volunteers to fill four new board seats.
