YSU baseball splits, softball falls at CSU

Strong pitching was a common theme for both Youngstown State and Milwaukee on Friday as the teams split a Horizon League baseball doubleheader at Miller Park.
Robert Switka retired 19 straight batters after allowing a first-inning homer in game one, and YSU scored a run in the 10th inning to win 3-2.
Milwaukee’s Chad Pierce did not allow a hit until a leadoff single in the sixth as the Panthers won game two 8-0 in seven innings.
Jeremy Banks singled in David Leon to give the Penguins a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of game one, and Milwaukee had its only success against Switka in the bottom half. Switka retired the first two batters of the frame, but Doug Dekoning singled and Paul Hoenecke followed with a two-run homer.
In the seventh, Phil Lipari reached on an error to start the inning and later scored on another throwing miscue.
Leon and Neil Schroth hit back-to-back singles to start the 10th, and Banks’ sacrifice bunt advanced them to second and third with one out. Joe Iacobucci was walked intentionally to load the bases, and Drew Dosch hit a sacrifice fly to score Leon.
Kevin McCulloh retired the Panthers in order in the bottom of the 10th to earn his fourth win
In game two, YSU was held to one hit by Pierce, a single by Dissinger.
Blake Aquadro took the loss, allowing seven runs in 41/3 innings.
SOFTBALL
CLEVELAND
Tess Sito was the winning pitcher and had two hits to lead Cleveland State past Youngstown State, 3-1, in a Horizon League softball game on Friday.
Sito (19-14) pitched a complete game, allowing five hits, and she struck out six for the Vikings (23-17, 8-6 Horizon League).
The Penguins (22-19, 5-11) were limited to a pair of doubles by Sarah Gabel and Amanda Palmore, and singles by Gabel, Jordan Ingalls and Kim Klonowski.
Casey Crozier (12-9) pitched five innings for Youngstown State and took the loss. She allowed five hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking three.
Cleveland State scored two runs in the bottom of the seocnd inning when Katelyn Ciminelli led off with a single and Macall Sheppard walked. A sacrifice bunt moved up both runners, and Ciminelli scored on a wild pitch. The Vikings made it 2-0 on a double steal after Megan Bashak walked.
The Penguins scored their run in the fourth inning when Gabel doubled with two outs and scored on Palmore’s two-bagger.
Cleveland State got the run back in the fifth when Sito singled with one out, went to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrea Nagy.
