In just their first year of competition, six students from the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center have qualified for the national competition of Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA).
The students earned their spots at nationals after competing at the two-day state level competition in Columbus. Jordan Woolley, a senior from Austintown, captured third place in biotechnology at the competition. To earn the prize in his division, Woolley completed a written test and a hands-on skills test, where he tested fecal samples and completed a blood typing test.
Thomas Slaven, who teaches biotechnology at MCCTC, coached Woolley and his teammates for their first year in the HOSA competition.
“It was a great first showing for our team in the competition,” Slaven said of his team. “Jordan wanted to win and definitely put the work in. I’m very proud of everyone’s effort.”
Woolley plans to attend Youngstown State University in the fall and work to become a nurse anesthetist. His HOSA win earned him four credit hours at YSU.
In June, Woolley and his teammates will head to Anaheim, Calif., for the national competition. Although there is plenty of studying to do until June, the event is providing a bit of fun – the group will be visiting Disneyland while there.
Along with Woolley, Slaven will be bringing MCCTC students Hannah Chapella, Maria Torres, Toni Mansfield, Ashley Cunningham, and Jessica Magliocca to the national competition.
