The green grass surrounding Poland Presbyterian Church was decorated with neon pink, green, blue, and purple on April 17. And a group of excited children were ready to snatch up the plastic Easter eggs at the first yell of “Go!”

Although the egg hunt is pure fun, the staff at Poland Presbyterian first teaches its youth about the religious aspect of the Easter holiday. The church holds the event on Palm Sunday and precedes the event with a lesson on the symbolism of the palm.

“Along with the importance of this day in our faith, we use this event to celebrate the kids of our congregation,” explained Martha Coulter, the church’s director of Christian education. “The kids’ choir sang this morning and processed with their palms. Our middle school and high school youth helped hide all of our eggs, and the little ones get to enjoy it. There is some fun for all of our youth today.”

While religious services were still happening inside, the church’s youth director Kati Hartwig helped hide the eggs outside with a group of the church’s middle and high school youth.

Watching the group hide the colorful treats, Hartwig shared with a laugh, “Sometimes, I think this group has more fun hiding them than the little kids do finding them.”

When religious services were over, Poland Presbyterian’s kids gathered at the door and the race began. There were muddy shoes and dresses along the way, but the children weren’t fazed as they finished the hunt and huddled in the church’s foyer to open their eggs for treats.

Coulter was glad to see the joy in the kids.

“This event is really all about them, and the really do love it,” she observed.
