Mothers put others first

Relay For Life of Poland will host a Trash and Treasure Sale May 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Poland Masonic Lodge, 7685 Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road in Poland.

Come spend some time browsing items with your mom — and maybe even find a gift for her, too.

Relay For Life of Poland will be July 8-9 at Poland Seminary High School.

Relay For Life mobilizes the community to celebrate those who have battled cancer, to remember loved ones lost and to fight back against cancer.

Library Friends host luncheon Tuesday

The Friends of the Poland Library will host its annual catered luncheon Tuesday in the Poland library meeting room at 10 a.m.

Help local student go to Canada

DonaVito’s Italian Grille, 136 S. Bridge St., Struthers, is hosting a spaghetti dinner Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. with proceeds benefiting Jeffrey Vrabel, Jr.’s trip to Canada with People to People.

Bond with your babies

The Poland branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is hosting “Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books” for babies 6-23 months Wednesdays in May at 10 a.m.

The event includes developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.

This program is available for children ages 2 and 3 Thursdays in May at 10:30 a.m. and for children ages 4 and 5 Thursdays in May at 1 p.m.

Trim a tree for May

Decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County throughout the month of May during library hours.

St. Elizabeth’s hosts May golf outing

St. Elizabeth Health Center will host its fourth annual Trauma Service Golf Outing May 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $75 per single player or $300 per foursome and includes golf, cart, prizes and food. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Registration deadline is May 12. The event will support trauma center outreach and injury prevention programs.

MCCTC offering salon appointments to public

The Cosmetology students at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are now offering afternoon hours at their salon to the public.

Afternoon appointments are available starting at noon.

All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $6.

Services include haircuts, hairstyles, perms, relaxers, facials, hair removal, hair color and manicures.

The salon will be open now until May by appointment only.

Monday meetings set for conservation district

Grocery stores help Wounded Warriors

Three local Nemenz IGA’s will participate in a national cause marketing initiative to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project.

Locations include 2980 McCartney Road, Youngstown; 8 N. Broad St., Canfield; and 655 Creed St., Struthers.

During this national promotion, from May 27 through Sept. 5, IGA will donate 10 cents from the sale of every specially-marked case of IGA brand water to Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors.

Help the dogs by being at breakfast

For the Dogs Animal Rescue will host a pancake breakfast May 7 at Leonard Kirtz School, 4801 Woodridge Dr. in Austintown, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Admission is $7 per person for an all-you-can-eat breakfast that includes pancakes, sausage, milk, orange juice and coffee.

A Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle will be available.

Proceeds from the event will help For the Dogs, a nonprofit animal rescue group which saves dogs mainly from the Mahoning County Dog Pound and raises funds for a building of its own.

Beginner golf clinics offered

Boat safely this season

A boating safety class will be offered May 14 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Birch Hill Cabin.

Ohio law requires that anyone born after Jan. 1, 1982 who wishes to operate a watercraft over 10 HP must successfully complete an approved boating course or proficiency exam.

Junior Women’s meeting scheduled

The next meeting of the Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will be Monday at The Inn At The Green Bed and Breakfast in Poland at 6:30 p.m.

Rivers Casino trip to help fight cancer

The 2011 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Rivers Casino May 14.

All proceeds from the trip will be given to the American Cancer Society.

The bus will leave from Fab Limo of Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 9 a.m. and return at 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $25 per person and each player will be given $15 in play and a $5 food coupon.
