The doors of the Davis YMCA were open to the public on April 16, as the facility celebrated its Healthy Kids Day by welcoming community families for a play date.

The celebration is part of the Activate America Initiative, a YMCA program that assists kids, adults, and families in leading healthy lifestyles. The Davis YMCA has participated in the event since its opening six years ago.

“When there are games, computers, and television, we understand that sometimes it’s hard to get families moving,” said YMCA family director, Adele Taylor.

“Today we’re promoting active playing and letting the community experience everything our facility has to offer.”

The facility had activities for all ages during the April 16 event.

The food court featured healthy snacks and visitors from organizations like Mill Creek Park, the Mahoning County Public Library, the Aut Mori Grotto Clowns, and Camp Fitch.

The multipurpose room featured a bouncy castle and activities for younger children, and the facility’s gym had hula hoops, bowling, and games for 7 to 13-year-olds.

Gina Ricciardi and her friend Isabella Roush played in the gym together, but couldn’t decide what they liked best.

“We really liked the spring board that they have here in the gym — that was cool. Although, we haven’t gone swimming yet,” Ricciardi said.

The YMCA’s recreation pool was open to guests, but the lap pool was turned into a makeshift kayaking area.

Jay Campbell, aquatic activities director for Camp Fitch, gave kayaking lessons to guests during Healthy Kids Day.

“Camp Fitch is all about getting kids up and active. We love to have kids try something new, whether it’s at Camp Fitch or here at the YMCA,” Campbell shared.

Taylor said her favorite part of the day was meeting many new kids and families.

“It’s great to welcome guests from many different communities. This day really celebrates what the YMCA is all about,” Taylor said.
