Cancer support meeting set

The St. Michael’s Canfield Cancer Support Group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Family Life Center.

The speaker will be Jim Merhaut, author, national speaker and founder ofwww.spiritualhelpforyou.com.

The support group is open to anyone whose life has been touched by cancer.

Name change and new agenda for group

The Support Group for the Unemployed or Underemployed at The Ursuline Center is will reconvene in May under the title of Hope Works of the Mahoning Valley at the Ursuline Center. Its purpose will be to provide job networking and support for the unemployed and underemployed and will be facilitated by Joan Sonnett, Peggy Eicher and Eileen Novotny.

On May 12, the group will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Prato Hall at The Ursuline Center, 4280 Shields Road. A representative of Callos Personnel Employment Services, Boardman, will have a presentation on getting the most out of a job search.

Terry Shifflet, student service specialist for eastern Gateway Community College, will meet with the group May 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the former North Side Hospital. Attendees are to park in the small parking in front of the former Tod Children’s Hospital and enter the door under the EGCC banner. The group will have access to a complete computer lab, the opportunity to take a skill and interest inventory and receive information on the local job market.

On May 26, the group will meet in Prato Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to focus on developing interview skills, avoiding red flags and common mistakes and emphasizing skills and strengths.

The Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St., will host Ladies Night Out May 13 at 6 p.m.

Tickets are available until May 10 and are $9 for adults and $4.50 for girls ages 6-12.

Children 6 and under are admitted free.

The menu includes chicken cordon bleu, twice-baked potatoes, rolls, green beans, fruit salad, homemade pie, coffee and tea.

Spring cleaning sale planned

Canfield Christian Church, 123 S. Broad St., will host a spring cleaning sale May 20-21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Take home chicken for dinner

Western Reserve United Methodist Church, 4580 Canfield Road, will host its Take Out Chicken Dinner Thursday from 4 p.m. until sold out.

The cost for the dinner is $7 and includes stuffed chicken breast, mashed potatoes, green beans and brownie.

Gianetti finishes fourth in essay contest

Canfield’s Emily Gianetti won fourth place in the Candace Gay Essay Contest during the Youngstown State University English Festival April 6-8.

Awards are given to junior and senior high school students who exhibit distinct writing ability in the essay contest. This year’s theme had students imagine they were a character from one of the festival books and write a letter to another fictional character trying to convince them to go on a dangerous journey.

Remember the Civil War at Bond House

The Canfield Historical Society’s Spring Lecture Series concludes May 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Bond House with a lecture by Dr. Hugh Earnhardt.

This lecture is associated in-part with programming going on across the state, and the whole United States, in connection with the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.

For the Dogs Animal Rescue will host a pancake breakfast May 7 at Leonard Kirtz School, 4801 Woodridge Dr. in Austintown, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Admission is $7 per person for an all-you-can-eat breakfast that includes pancakes, sausage, milk, orange juice and coffee.

A Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle will be available.

Proceeds from the event will help For the Dogs, a nonprofit animal rescue group which saves dogs mainly from the Mahoning County Dog Pound and raises funds for a building of its own.

Bond with your babies

The Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is hosting “Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books” for babies 6-23 months May 9 at 10 a.m.

The event includes developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.

St. Elizabeth’s hosts May golf outing

St. Elizabeth Health Center will host its fourth annual Trauma Service Golf Outing May 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $75 per single player or $300 per foursome and includes golf, cart, prizes and food. Cash prizes will be awarded.

MCCTC offering salon appointments to public

The Cosmetology students at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are now offering afternoon hours at their salon to the public.

Afternoon appointments are available starting at noon.

All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $6.

Services include haircuts, hairstyles, perms, relaxers, facials, hair removal, hair color and manicures.

Grocery stores help Wounded Warriors

Three local Nemenz IGA’s will participate in a national cause marketing initiative to raise money for Wounded Warrior Project.

Locations include 2980 McCartney Road, Youngstown; 8 N. Broad St., Canfield; and 655 Creed St., Struthers.

During this national promotion, from May 27 through Sept. 5, IGA will donate 10 cents from the sale of every specially-marked case of IGA brand water to Wounded Warrior Project, an organization whose mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors.

Clothing giveaway at Kingdom Community

Boat safely this season

Ohio law requires that anyone born after Jan. 1, 1982 who wishes to operate a watercraft over 10 HP must successfully complete an approved boating course or proficiency exam.

St. Michael’s Catholic Church is hosting a “Throwback game night” May 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the St. Michael’s Family Life Center. The event is open to all local teens in grades five through 12. It’s sponsored by the Youth Collaborative of St. Michael’s.

Rivers Casino trip to help fight cancer

The 2011 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Rivers Casino May 14.

All proceeds from the trip will be given to the American Cancer Society.

The bus will leave from Fab Limo of Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 9 a.m. and return at 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $25 per person and each player will be given $15 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Junior Women’s meeting scheduled

The next meeting of the Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will be Monday at The Inn At The Green Bed and Breakfast in Poland at 6:30 p.m.

A luau for the spring banquet is planned. Members are to bring items for car/motorcycle care for baskets to be raffled at the upcoming bike nights to be held at Quaker Steak and Lube in Austintown.

Help clean up America

Individuals, neighborhoods, civic groups, youth groups, garden clubs, athletic teams and businesses in Canfield are encouraged to join in the Keep the Mahoning Valley Beautiful annual cleanup through May 31.

The Mahoning County Green Team will supply the vests, bags, gloves, release forms and other clean-up materials. Cleanups must be conducted on public lands only, such as vacant lots, streets, stretches of highway, medians, parks or waterfronts.

To volunteer, contact the recycling coordinator at 330-272-2138. The clean-up is run in conjunction with the Great American Clean-up.
