From April 11 to 15, Boardman United Methodist Preschool celebrated complete wellness with their “Better Me, Better World” week of activities.

Peg Flynn, environmental activities coordinator for the Green Team, visited the school to read a story, complete a craft with the students, and discover some of the green initiatives the school already has in place.

Before the storytime began, BUMP teacher Cara Pecchia and her 4-year-old students explained some of their earth-friendly activities.

For Easter, Pecchia’s class dyed Easter eggs with coffee and purple cabbage. For the school’s “Better Me, Better World” week, the class created rain sticks, bookmarks, jewelry, vase, and games all from recycled materials.

“I think at this age, recycling and thinking about the Earth can become a way life. I like to teach the kids that you don’t have to be big kids to change the world — it can absolutely happen at any age,” Pecchia shared.

Flynn applauded the school and Pecchia’s care for the environment, before starting an Easter-themed story time with the students of BUMP.

Flynn read the story “Recycle Every Day,” which follows Minna the Bunny as she must think about ways to recycle creatively. The book shared advice on reusing plastic bags, recycling cans, composting and donating books and clothes. The kids then decorated magnets made out of recycled paper and bottle caps.

“I hope the craft will remind students to give a quick call to the Green Team or try to recycle. It’s a nice reminder for parents, too. Any change at any age can help the earth,” Flynn shared.
