YOUNGSTOWN

The city’s board of control approved the sale of land on the South Side that will be the location of a full-service grocery store in a neighborhood without one for about a decade.

The board agreed Friday to sell the 5.1-acre parcel in the Fosterville neighborhood for $14,000 to Bottom Dollar Food.

The store is expected to open in November.

Council had a special meeting Thursday primarily to approve the sale because Bottom Dollar, a discount grocery-store chain without any locations in Ohio, wants to start construction as soon as possible.

“It’s very important in that area” to have a full-service grocery store, said Councilman Paul Drennen, D-5th. The store would be in his ward. “The only choice people [in that neighborhood] have are corner stores.”

Drennen said he expects other businesses to open in that neighborhood because of the new grocery store.

The property is bounded by West Princeton, Glenwood and West Indianola avenues and is the location of the former Cleveland School and adjacent Fosterville Park.

Bottom Dollar also is building a full-service grocery store on East Midlothian Boulevard at the location of a former Big Lots, near Zedaker Street.

The company is looking at locations on the East and North sides for other grocery stores, city officials say.
