Austintown’s Grace qualifies for state competition


Students in the Early Childhood Development program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center competed in the 2011 FCCLA Early Childhood Development Competition, earning five gold medals in individual events and one bronze medal in the team competition.

Of the students who competed, two will be advancing to the state competition – Alisa Barcley of Campbell and Dasjah Grace of Austintown.

The students competed in four categories, language and literacy, concept curriculum, teacher resource kit and early childhood team.

With each of these categories the students had to research, develop and present lesson plans, activities and kits that met the state’s content standards for Early Childhood Education.

Barcley earned a gold medal in the Language and Literacy event with her props and telling of the story, “There Was an Old Monster.”

Grace received a gold medal in the Teacher Resource Kit competition.

For her event, she developed materials to teach measurement of time, weight, length and volume to preschool children.

Other students competing at the event and earning high marks were Jesse Bigelow, Jackson Milton, Gold Medal Concept Curriculum Development; Janet Bernard, Austintown, Gold Medal Teacher Resource Kit; Shomore DeNiro, Canfield, Gold Medal Concept Curriculum Development and Cinda-Jean Cox, Austintown, KaLeisha Jones, Boardman and Alisha Starkey, Boardman, Bronze Medal Early Childhood Team.
