Pro golfer targets diabetes in Indian Country
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Pro golfer Notah Begay III says he’s dedicated to reversing the growing problem of diabetes among Native American youth.
He took his wellness message to the airwaves Friday during the national Native America Calling radio program and in a television show broadcast to students in nearly 200 schools.
Part Navajo and part pueblo Indian, Begay says diabetes has become an epidemic among his people but it’s a disease that’s preventable.
The 38-year-old golfer is issuing a challenge to Indian youth to follow his example and exercise every day and eat healthy.
Begay’s charity, the NB3 Foundation, is working on developing programs aimed specifically at helping Indian youth avoid the disease.
Fresh off the Masters, Begay says he’s gearing up for a busy summer tournament schedule in Canada.
