Sources: Chrysler aims to refinance

detroit

Chrysler plans to announce today that it will start a formal process of discussions with banks to seek the refinancing of $7.5 billion in government loans and that more details will be announced Monday, according to people familiar with the matter.

Chrysler is seeking to refinance $5.8 billion it owes the U.S. Treasury and $1.7 billion it owes the Canadian government.

If Chrysler can refinance and repay those loans, it would clear the way for Fiat to pay $1.27 billion for an additional 16 percent stake in Chrysler, bringing its share to 46 percent.
