Third-seeded Marin Cilic edged Simone Bolelli 7-5, 7-6 (4) to advance to the second round. Cilic was the runner-up last year and used his 11 aces to help win the close match. Also, fifth-seeded Florian Mayer eased past qualifier Steve Darcis 6-1, 6-2. Other winners were Teymuraz Gabashvili, Radek Stepanek and Philipp Petzschner.

Estoril Open

OEIRAS, PORTUGAL

Juan Martin del Potro got by Pedro Sousa 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round. The eighth-seeded del Potro is working his way back up the rankings after undergoing wrist surgery almost a year ago. Also, sixth-seeded Thomaz Bellucci defeated Frederik Nielsen 7-5, 6-1. In the women’s competition, fourth-seeded Anastasija Sevastova was defeated by Urszula Radwanska 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-1. Other winners were second-seeded Jarmila Gajdosova, third-seeded Klara Zakopalova and Greta Arn.

BELGRADE, SERBIA

John Isner lost to Ricardo Mello 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the first round. Fernando Gonzalez defeated qualifier Martin Klizan 6-2, 6-4 in his return from an eight-month injury layoff because of hip surgery. Also, Feliciano Lopez upset eighth-seeded Argentine Juan Monaco 6-4, 7-5; sixth-seeded Ernests Gulbis lost 6-2, 6-4 to Illya Marchenko, and Filippo Volandri defeated Dusan Lajovic 6-1, 6-4.

Barcelona Open

BARCELONA, SPAIN

Fifth-seeded Sara Errani beat Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-1, 6-0, while Alberta Brianti topped Tsvetana Pironkova 6-1, 6-2, and Mirjana Lucic of Croatia’s first win of the season was a 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Ekaterina Makarova.
