4 Pa. restaurant break-ins net booze, change

ROSS, Pa.

Police say a spree of restaurant robberies netted a western Pennsylvania burglar little more than a bottle of booze and some loose change.

Ross police say four bars or restaurants were broken into within one hour Monday morning, ending when a pizza-place worker scared off the would-be thief.

Investigators say the spree started around 5 a.m. when a restaurant’s door was pried open, but only some change and beer from the cooler was taken. A nearby bar’s glass door was smashed soon after, and a surveillance camera recorded the thief failing to pry open a cash register and taking a bottle of liquor instead.

Authorities say the man then smashed another restaurant’s door before his fourth break-in try was foiled.

The incidents are under investigation.

Boys drive excavator at Pa. mine, smash bulldozer

GREENSBORO, Pa.

State police say two boys, age 12 and 9, drove a large excavator at a southwestern Pennsylvania strip mine, smashing a bulldozer in the process.

Police say the 12-year-old will be charged with felony criminal mischief in Greene County Juvenile Court. The other boy is too young to be charged under Pennsylvania law.

Police say Ali Co. Excavating and Construction, of Kingwood, W.Va., has insurance for the mine site in Monongahela Township but not for the equipment that was damaged.

The boys caused $164,000 in damage — about $150,000 of it to the bulldozer. Police say the boys also emptied fire extinguishers in every vehicle on the site.

Police say the boys acknowledged causing the damage Thursday, saying they were bored.

Nesting mallard rules roost at Ohio supermarket

MEDINA, Ohio

The eggs may not be fresh, but they are drawing attention at an Ohio supermarket.

A female mallard duck is nesting atop bags of mulch at a Giant Eagle store in Medina, Ohio. A small sign advises shoppers to beware of the bird and grab their mulch from another pile at the store entrance.

The Akron Beacon Journal reports the duck is sitting on at least 10 eggs in a nest assembled on top of an 8-foot stack of bags. Store officials think she laid the eggs a couple of weeks ago.

A store spokeswoman told the newspaper two male mallards were seen in the parking lot earlier this spring.
