WOMEN’S GOLF

HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla.

Junior Samantha Formeck finished second and Sarah Heimlich tied for seventh as the Youngstown State women’s golf team concluded play at the Horizon League Championships at the Mission Inn Resort. In the team race, the Penguins placed fifth. Formeck finished with a three-round total of 235 following a final round of 78. She had a 74 on Friday and an 83 on Saturday. Butler’s Michele Nash took home medalist honors by two strokes finishing with a 233. In her career, Formeck also placed first (2009) and third (2010) in the individual standings. The Bulldogs won the event with a team score of 975, taking the crown by eight shots over Detroit. YSU had rounds of 346, 332 and 333 to total 1,011. Heimlich had three birdies to complete a round of 79 and fire a 244 for the tournament. Senior Katie Rogner finished 16th in her final collegiate competition. Rogner had rounds of 87, 83 and 83 to compile a three-round total of 253. Freshman Angela Molaskey was 32nd with a 281.

MEN’S GOLF

HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla.

A strong final round by the YSU men’s golf team gave them a third-place finish at the 2011 Horizon League Championships at the Mission Inn Resort. Junior Michael Lower finished fourth overall with a three-round score of 229 to lead the Penguins. YSU had a team score of 302 and moved up four spots from seventh place after the first two rounds. Cleveland State won the team title with a 925, while Wright State was second with a 932. WSU and YSU had the two best final rounds of the event. The Raiders carded a 301 on Sunday while the Guins finished with a 302. The Penguins had four players card rounds of 77 or lower on Sunday to make move up the team leaderboard. Spenser Sulzener had a one-over par 73 in his final collegiate round. Joe Santisi had birdies on one and 10 en route to a tournament-best 77 in his final round. Anthony Conn fired a 74 and finished with a three-round total of 235 and finish 13th.
