Suspect dead, officer wounded in gunfight near LA

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a gunfight in a Los Angeles suburb left the gunman dead and a Monterey Park police officer and two bystanders injured.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Gordon said in a statement early Monday that police were called Sunday to a reported stabbing but they were fired on when they got there.

Gordon says the man continued firing as he ran, hitting the officer and two bystanders. The gunman was shot and killed during the chase.

Gordon says the stabbing victim, the officer and the bystanders, who were both shot in the legs, were all hospitalized and in stable condition.

There was a search for a possible second suspect, but Deputy Benjamin Grubb told City News Service only the gunman was involved. His identity has not been released.
