INDIANAPOLIS, IND.

YSU freshman Casey Crozier fired a five-hitter and struck out three to shut out Butler, 3-0, in eight innings and give the Penguins a doubleheader split on Saturday. The Penguins lost the first game, 4-3, in nine innings. Crozier picked up her 12th victory and third shutout of the season for the Penguins (22-18, 5-10 Horizon). Junior Jordan Ingalls doubled to right field with one out and then scored on Samantha Snodgrass’ two-out single to center field. Sophomore Sarah Gable doubled down the left field line to plate Snodgrass and junior Kristen Philen then singled to center and Gabel scored on a throwing error. Crozier retired the Bulldogs (26-18, 12-4) in order in the bottom half of the eighth to finish the game. In the first game, Butler jumped out to a 2-0 lead after five innings as Butler ace Jenny Esparza was tossing a no-hitter through 51/3 innings with 11 strikeouts. Philen broke up the no-hitter with a single to right field, and after back-to-back walks to Haley Thomas and Kristina Rendle loaded the bases, Ingalls ripped a single to center field to score Philen and Thomas with the tying runs. Vicky Rumph plated Rendle with the go-ahead run, 3-2, with a ground out to second base. The Bulldogs tied the game on a suicide squeeze, 3-3, and then won on an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Women’s golf

HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.

The YSU women’s golf team moved up to fifth place in the team standings, but Samantha Formeck dropped to third place at the Horizon League Golf Championships at Mission Inn Resort. YSU carded a 332 during the second round. Formeck, Katie Rogner, Sarah Heimlich and Angela Molaskey each shot 83 for YS&, which has a two-round score of 678. Butler leads with a 650. Formeck has a two-round total of 157 and is three shots of the leader, Butler’s Michele Nash. Formeck is set to begin her final round at 8:10 a.m. today Heimlich is eighth with a 165, Rogner is 18th with a 170 and Molaskey is 32nd with a 188.

Men’s golf

HOWIE-IN-THE-HILLS, FLA.

Junior Michael Lower is in sixth place and the YSU men’s golf team sits in seventh at the Horizon League Championship. Lower has a two-round total of 153 while YSU has a score of 634. Cleveland State leads with a two-round total of 616. CSU’s Andrew Bailey is the leader with a 148. After an opening round 315, the Penguins shot a 319 on Saturday. Also for the Penguins, freshman Mark Olbrych is 17th with a 159 (76-83), Anthony Conn is 24th with a 161 (81-80), Spenser Sulzener is 31st with a 163 (82-81) and Joe Santisi is 33rd with a 166 (80-86).
