Bullies to Buddies event set for Saturday

WARREN

YWCA Warren, 375 North Park Ave., will host a free seminar for children in kindergarten through eighth grade and their parents regarding “Stranger Danger and Bullying to Buddies” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday as part of the organization’s Minority Health Month seminar series.

Ron Sanders, founder of Real Life Situations, will teach children how to deal with strangers and how to avoid potentially dangerous situations.

The Bullies to Buddies curriculum teaches tolerance and avoidance techniques using Tai Sabaki moves, and will be taught by Jennifer Costarell, therapeutic martial-arts instructor at Summit Academy in Warren.

Martial arts also will be performed by the demonstration teams from GTA Karate & Summit Academy, Warren.

A light lunch will be provided by city of Warren’s Weed & Seed Program.

The first 50 attendees will receive a tote bag, and there will be a raffle to win Giant Eagle gift cards. The event is funded by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health.

Pa. grants workshop

NEW CASTLE, PA.

U.S. Rep. Jason Altmire of McCandless, D-4th, is sponsoring a grants workshop for local government and nonprofits from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Lawrence County Government Center, 430 Court St.

Representatives from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture will discuss securing funding to strengthen communities.

Senior Watch

Information on the township’s Senior Watch Program will be showcased during an open house from 10 a.m. to noon May 4 at the township building, 1315 Church Hill-Hubbard Road.

A ribbon-cutting and open house at the new Hubbard Elementary School, 150 Hall Ave., is planned from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Buhl Park cleanup day

HERMITAGE, Pa.

The annual Buhl Park cleanup day has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Volunteers will register at the pool house next to the Buhl/ Timblin Casino. Refreshments will be served. Students needing community service are encouraged to participate. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and a rake.

Recycle electronics

SHARON, Pa.

Unwanted personal computers and cellphones can be safely recycled at E-Cycling Day from noon to 4 p.m. Friday at Penn State-Shenango campus.

The free service is sponsored by Penn State-Shenango’s Information Sciences and Technology department, Starkey’s Computer and Electronics and the Technology Council of Northwest Pennsylvania. It will be in the parking lot on the corner of Silver Street and Penn Avenue, next to Penn State’s Sharon Hall building.

Only computers and cellphones that are less than 10 years old will be accepted, including servers, laptops, components such as keyboards, mice, cables and flat-screen monitors. Old-style cathode-ray-tube computer monitors will be accepted for a $25 fee.

Penn State Shenango students will restore all salvageable equipment and give it to the Prince of Peace Center in Farrell, which will distribute the items to its clients.

Hartford spring cleanup

HARTFORD

Hartford Township will have its annual spring cleanup for township residents only from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 21.

Accepted will be tires (no mud- or dirt-filled tires), water heaters, stoves, washers, dryers, lead-acid batteries, refrigerators, etc. All Freon must be removed before the item is brought. No paints, oils or liquid chemicals will be taken.

The trash containers will be placed at Hartford Center to accommodate traffic.
