Friday’s baseball game between Youngstown State and Cleveland State was postponed until Sunday due to rain. The time for Sunday’s game has not been set. The teams are still scheduled to play a doubleheader today starting at noon.

Softball

INDIANAPOLIS

Friday’s doubleheader at Butler was canceled due to inclement weather conditions. The two teams will play a doubleheader today, starting at 11 a.m.

On Thursday night Youngstown State lost to Ohio State 2-1 in eight innings. The Penguins (21-17) had just three hits, but scored int he second inning on an RBI single by Sarah Gabel. YSU pitchers Casey Crozier and sophomore Hana Somogyi each surrendered just three hits and allowed one run.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Howie-In-The-Hills, Fla.

Junior Samantha Formeck leads the Horizon League Women’s Golf Championships after carding a one-over-par 74 at the Mission Inn Resort Golf Course. As team, the Penguins scored 346 trailing defending champion Detroit by 20 strokes. Formeck, who placed first at the event as a freshman and third as a sophomore, had three birdies on her first nine holes to offset three bogeys. She leads Detroit’s Alianna Stefan by one shot entering today’s second round. YSU sophomore Sarah Heimlich fired an opening-round 82 for seventh-place, while senior Katie Rogner had eagle on par-5 seventh hole but finished with an 87. Sarah Scheidmantel carded a 103 and Angela Molaskey had a 105.

Men’s golf

Youngstown State opened the Horizon League Championships with a first-round score 315 on Friday at the Mission Inn Resort Golf Course. Cleveland State (308) led after day one. Only 12 strokes separate the entire field while six are within three shots of each other. YSU is tied for sixth with Loyola. Leading the way for the Penguins was freshman Mark Olbrych who carded a round of 76. Olbrych is competing in his first Horizon Championships. He was even-par on the back nine and carded a birdie on 15. Michael Lower had two birdies in his first round en route to firing a 78. Joe Santisi also carded two birdies and had an impressive back nine coming in at 1 under par. Anthony Conn birdied the ninth hole and finished with an 81 while senior Spenser Sulzener had a 82. The second round is today with the final round on Sunday.

Women’s tennis

For the second straight year, Youngstown State’s Margarita Sadovnikova has been named first-team All-Horizon League. She is the first women’s tennis player in school history to earn first-team All-Horizon League honors twice. Sadovnikova, the Penguins’ No. 1 singles player, posted an 18-7 overall mark and a 6-2 ledger in the Horizon League this season. She ended the campaign on a six-match winning streak and won eight of her last nine matches after March 27. Five of the six wins came in straight sets. Her 18 wins in one season tied for the fourth-most by Penguin in a season. In her two-year career she has a singles record of 31-14. The 31 wins already ranks her 12th in school history.

Men’s tennis

Youngstown State dropped its final match of the season, 4-2 to Butler 4-2 in the fifth-place match at the Horizon League Championships on Friday. The Penguins earned points at No. 5 and No. 6 singles with Rob Emig and Rodrigo Campos earning victories. YSU’s Felipe Rosa dropped a 6-2, 6-4 match to Chris Herron at No. 2 singles, Max Schmerin lost 6-3, 6-1 to Zach Ervin at No. 3 singles while Zeeshan Ismail fell 6-2, 6-2 to Lenz Theodor at No. 4 singles. Emig won his final collegiate match defeating Brad DiCarlo 6-2, 6-1 while Campos beat David Dolins 6-7 (2), 6-0, 1-0 (4) at No. 5. YSU’s Tariq Ismail was named first-team All-Horizon League. He is the first YSU men’s tennis player to be named all-league since Tom Barth in 2004-05. Ismail posted a team-high 19 victories. In Horizon League play, he earned wins over Detroit, Valparaiso and Green Bay. He had three-set losses against Wright State and Butler. In his two seasons with the program, he has 30 victories, all coming at No. 1 singles.

Men’s Basketball

Youngstown State will host four boys basketball camp this summer. The coaching staff will offer two team shootout camps, June 5 and June 11. There will also be two individiual camps, June 13-16, and June 20-23.

The team shootout camps (June 5 and June 11) are targeted for varsity and junior varsity high school teams and costs $275 per varsity team and $210 per junior varsity squad. There is also a two-day option which costs $475 for varsity and $350 for junior varsity. The team shootouts run from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day. The Full-Court Camp is an individual camp that runs from June 13-16, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This camp is aimed at kids entering fifth through 12th grade. Early registration cost of the Full-Court Camp is $130 and has deadline of June 6. Late registration for the Full-Court Camp is $145. The Half-Court Camp, June 20-23, is another individual camp that is geared toward kids entering grades 2-9. This camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to Noon.
