South all-stars defeat North

Salem’s Trent Toothman was named North Defensive Player of the Game, but Tyler Williams scored on two quarterback draws in the first half to lead the South to a 25-7 victory over the North on Friday afternoon in the All-Star Classic at Ohio Stadium.

Toothman, who has committed to Ball State, was one of several local players on the North squad that was coached by Howland’s Dick Angle.

Campbell Memorial’s Mickey Sikora was an assistant coach for the North team.

Williams, an Akron signee from Cincinnati Colerain, was the game’s most valuable player. He braced runs of 8 and 6 yards around the North’s 26-yard pass from Connor Cook (Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit/Michigan State commit) to Ohio State signee Devin Smith (Massillon Washington) for a 14-7 halftime score.

Jayshon Jackson (Westerville South/Grand Rapids) increased the South lead to 22-7 with 1:14 left in the third quarter with a 25-yard run and a two-point conversion off a fake when he passed to Nick Vannett (Westerville Central/Ohio State).

J.D. Detmer (Hilliard Davidson/Toledo) added a 41-yard field goal with 1:59 to play.

Among area players, Demond Hymes (Warren Harding) rushed two times for 19 yards for the North team.

Darius Patton (Poland) had three pass receptions for 57 yards.

Jayshon Jackson was named the South Offensive MVP, rushing 13 times for a game-high 115 yards, while Hunter Maynard of Columbus Watterson was named the South’s Defensive MVP.

Smith was named the North’s Offensive MVP, catching three passes for 68 yards.

The North still leads the all-time series 38-25-3.
