Book discussion networking night

Comic book fans unite at the library

The Poland branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is celebrating National Superhero Day with “Comixtreme,” sponsored by the Teen Advisory Board, Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Teens in grades seven through 12 who enjoy graphic novels, comic books, Manga and Cosplay don’t want to miss this event.

Be the Italian man or woman of the year

The Greater Youngstown Italian Festival scheduled for July 29-31 in downtown Youngstown is accepting applications for the Italian Man and Woman of the Year.

Applications for scholarships are also available for students of Youngstown State University. Deadline for applications is June 1.

Junior Women’s meeting scheduled

The next meeting of the Boardman-Poland Junior Women’s League will be May 2 at The Inn At The Green Bed and Breakfast in Poland at 6:30 p.m.

A luau for the spring banquet is planned. Members are to bring items for car/motorcycle care for baskets to be raffled at the upcoming bike nights to be held at Quaker Steak and Lube in Austintown.

The Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is hosting a special fundraising event and networking opportunity to share ideas and have fun with book clubs from across the valley May 12 at 6:30 p.m.

The Women’s Book Discussion Group hosts a night of fun with a fashion presentation by the Glitter Girls.

The evening includes a Boutique Sale, a raffle and finger foods and refreshments catered by Kravitz Delicatessen.

Admission is free for Friends of the Library (show your membership card) and $10 for nonmembers.

Bell ringers at luncheon

The Friends of the Library will host a Member Spring Luncheon with Bell Ringers from Mt. Olivet Church May 3 at 10 a.m. at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

Rivers Casino trip to help fight cancer

The 2011 Pink Ribbon Golf Classic committee is sponsoring a bus trip to the Rivers Casino May 14.

All proceeds from the trip will be given to the American Cancer Society.

The bus will leave from Fab Limo of Connecticut Avenue in Austintown at 9 a.m. and return at 6:30 p.m.

The cost is $25 per person and each player will be given $15 in play and a $5 food coupon.

Free blood pressure screenings at library

The Mahoning County Chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting a blood pressure screening at the Poland branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County May 24 at 1 p.m.

Decorate an ornament for the all-seasons tree at the Poland branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County throughout the month of May during regular library hours.

Bond with your babies

The Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is hosting “Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books” for babies 6-23 months Wednesdays in May at 10 a.m.

The event includes developmentally-appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.

This program is available for children ages 2 and 3 Thursdays in May at 10:30 a.m. and for children ages 4 and 5 Thursdays in May at 1 p.m.

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting a blood pressure screening at the Poland branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County Tuesday at 1 p.m.

The Audubon Society Mahoning Valley will host “Nesting Habits of North American Birds” Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on state Route 46 in Canfield.

See VineSong at the Church of Rock

VineSong, an international worship ministry team, will be hosted by The Church of Rock, 7025 Luteran Lane, Friday at 7 p.m.

The team is on its annual United States tour and will lead a worship on the steps of the U.S. Capitol at the National Day of Prayer event.

Grab stuff at the Gigantic Garage Sale

Angels for Animals will host its 17th annual Gigantic Garage Sale Friday through May 1 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

Admission is $5 on April 29 from 10 a.m. to noon and $1 on April 29 from noon to 7 p.m. and April 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On May 1, admission is free with half price on most items from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. wristbands will be sold for $5 and $10 to take anything until it’s gone.

No strollers, wagons or dogs will be permitted in the sale buildings.

Garage sale donations will be accepted April Monday through Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the main gate of the fairgrounds. Clean, usable items will be accepted. No refrigerators, stoves, large appliances, console televisions, encyclopedias, tires, artificial Christmas trees, or mattresses and box springs will be accepted.

Historical society meets

The Poland Historical Society will host regular meetings the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Little Red School House, 4515 Center Road.

St. Elizabeth’s hosts May golf outing

St. Elizabeth Health Center will host its fourth annual Trauma Service Golf Outing May 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $75 per single player or $300 per foursome and includes golf, cart, prizes and food. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Registration deadline is May 12. The event will support trauma center outreach and injury prevention programs.

MCCTC offering salon appointments to public

The Cosmetology students at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are now offering afternoon hours at their salon to the public.

Afternoon appointments are available starting at noon.

All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $6.

Services include haircuts, hairstyles, perms, relaxers, facials, hair removal, hair color and manicures.

The salon will be open now until May by appointment only.

Monday meetings set for conservation district

Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District Board meetings for 2011 will be at 7 p.m. the second Monday each month at the District Office, 850 Industrial Road in Youngstown.

Do yoga at the gardens

Bring a mat and small blanket to learn a blend of energizing yoga styles from Heidi Suraci at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout April.

Tuesdays will feature beginners’ classes from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and intermediate classes from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Thursday classes will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and are open to all levels.
