Students at Hilltop Elementary School did not let the fact that light snow showers were falling interfere with their annual Fun in the Sun celebration April 1. Despite the not-so-spring-like weather, the students celebrated spring by dressing as if they were going to the beach.

The students could dress in tropical clothes and accessories to celebrate spring. Students dressed in bright colors with Hawaiian leis, sunglasses, grass skirts, sun hats, ball caps and some had flowers in their hair. A few even wore sombreros to add an international flair to the day.

The cold weather did not dampen the students’ spirits during the lunch periods when tables in the cafeteria were cleared away to make room for the students to spread out beach towels and blankets and eat a picnic-style lunch, which included a pizza pocket, mini carrots, fruit, chips and milk.

The PTO provided a special treat to help celebrate the day and toward the end of each lunch period, PTO volunteers passed out cookies and cream ice cream bars to each student.

After lunch, the students went outside to the playground, and, for a few brief moments, the clouds dispersed and a few rays of sunshine cut through the cold air and provided a few moments of fun in the sun.
