With the cafeteria filled with beach balls hanging from the ceiling, cutouts of tropical fish on the walls, a giant palm tree on the door, and, of course, a paper sun, the students at C.H. Campbell Elementary School certainly felt like they were on vacation during the school’s annual Beach Day April 15.

Students were encouraged to dress in beach-wear on this day to celebrate spring, and they obliged, wearing everything from Hawaiian leis, to sunglasses, to tropical shirts to sun hats and shorts.

During each lunch period, with the tables cleared away, the students sat on the floor on beach towels to eat a picnic-style lunch. PTO volunteers helped pass out lunches to students.

According to Kent Polen, C.H. Campbell Elementary School principal, the annual event is held the day before the school’s spring break.

“We always hold Beach Day the day before our spring break. The children really look forward to it and have a great time,” Polen said.

The celebration of spring continued after lunch during recess on the playground where the children were able to frolic in the sunshine — just like they would if they were really at the beach.
