Boxers still being accepted for K.O. Drugs tournament

Staff report

Weigh-in and registration for the 2011 K.O. Drugs High School Boxing Tournament will take place today and April 30 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the ITAM Banquet Hall, 115 S. Meridian Rd.

The tournament runs every Friday in May beginning at 7 p.m. at the ITAM.

The 24th annual event is open to all high school boys and girls.

“Over 150 students entered last season, and we were able to crown 35 champions. This year, we hope to eclipse both totals,” said tournament founder and director Chuck Nelson.

“Since the tournament’s inception almost 25 years ago, K.O. Drugs Boxing has provided an opportunity for many young men and women to build confidence and commit to a meaningful program. Every participant agrees in writing to refrain from drug or alcohol use while in the month-long competition. This is what we are proudest of.”

The double-elimination tournament is made up of three divisions: Underclass (9th-10th graders), Upperclass (11th-12th graders) and Female.

The Upperclass and Underclass divisions are comprised of 15 weight classes, with five weight classes for the females.

Preliminary bouts will be three 45-second rounds with a one-minute break between rounds, while championship bouts will have one-minute rounds.

The tournament is designed for beginners with safety as a priority.

“Short rounds, extra-padded headgears and 18-ounce gloves help keep participants safe,” said Nelson, “but competent referees and cornermen are also integral to ensure safety with roughly 40 fights each night.”

Students under 18 years of age require parental consent. A $25 registration fee is also required to cover the cost of physical exam and health insurance for all participants.

Tickets for the event will be $9 for students and $10 for adults and will be available at the door each night.

Doors open at the ITAM May 6 at 6 p.m. with the first bout hitting the bell at 7.
