Ohio River flood threat forces horses from track

CINCINNATI (AP) — Horses are being removed to safety from a Cincinnati track along the Ohio River and a riverside school is being relocated, all because of high water expected this weekend.

Forecasters say a few days of heavy downpours could lead to flooding throughout Ohio.

The National Weather Service expects the Ohio River to top its flood level at Cincinnati by today night and remain above flood stage for five days.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports River Downs on Thursday began moving out about 500 horses. Spokesman John Engelhardt says it’s the first such evacuation he’s seen during 26 years with the track.

Cincinnati’s Riverview East Academy said Friday it would hold classes at another location beginning Monday. It’s the second time this year that flooding has forced students to flee.
