Angels falls short of win, but may still be in running

GREENFORD — Angels for Animals might still be in the running for cash prizes through an American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals competition.

The Angels organization placed 51st in the first part of the competition involving online voting. The top 50 organizations progressed to the second round of competition.

But General Manager Kate McDermott said the ASPCA has had competitors drop out of competition before and looks to the next winner in line to take their place.

“We were short 12 votes,” McDermott said. “We’re on their alternate list.”

The 50 animal shelters will compete to save at least 300 more animals — during the months of August, September and October 2011 — than they did over the same three-month period in 2010. The shelter with the biggest increase in animals saved will win a $100,000 grant for their shelter.

Prize money is available for the agency that gets the most community members involved totaling $25,000. Those organizations that do the best in their regions will be eligible for between $5,000 and $25,000 in grants, according to the ASPCA.
