USHL futures draft

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Phantoms will participate in the USHL futures draft today.

The Phantoms can select as many as six players to add to their affiliate list, which means they can’t be picked up by another team.

The draft begins at 11 a.m. and can be followed on a live video feed at ushldraft.com. Live updates will also be available on the Phantoms’ Facebook and Twitter pages.

Bocce champs

LOWELLVILLE

Falcon Foundry won the Mt. Carmel Doubles Bocce League by defeating Luva Bella Winery, 2-0.

Members of the winning team are Joe Slaven, Pinar Kuruc, Gary and Bonnie Slaven, Rock DeLisio, Butch and Roxanne George, Bob Slaven, Melinda Giancola and Don Dilullo.

Thomas selected

AUSTINTOWN

Mount Union senior Scott Thomas (West Branch High) was named Ohio Athletic Conf. men’s track athlete of the week.

Thomas won the 100 meters (11.1 seconds) and 200 (22.93) as he helped the Purple Raiders place second at the All-Ohio Championships.

Thomas also ran a leg on the winning 4x100 meter relay (42.43).

Miller in action

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico

Tom Miller of Mineral Ridge was a judge for the WBO boxing featherweight championship.

Challenger Orlando Salido of Mexico defeated top-ranked Juan Manuel Lopez of Puerto Rico by TKO in the eighth round of the scheduled 12-round fight.

2011 Music City Bowl game set for Dec. 30

NASHVILLE, Tenn.

The 2011 Music City Bowl game will be Dec. 30.

The game is scheduled for 5:40 p.m. Central time at LP Field and will be televised by ESPN. The bowl features a matchup of teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and Southeastern Conference.

Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Sept. 1.

North Carolina defeated Tennessee 30-27 in overtime in the 2010 Music City Bowl.

Grand jury indicts ex-UVa lacrosse player

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.

A grand jury on Monday indicted a former University of Virginia lacrosse player on murder and other charges in the death of a member of the women’s team whom he had been dating.

Besides first-degree murder, 23-year-old George Huguely of Chevy Chase, Md., faces felony murder, robbery, burglary, statutory burglary and grand larceny charges in the May 3, 2010, death of Yeardley Love.

Circuit Judge Edward Hogshire set a trial date for Feb. 6, and a motions hearing was also set for Nov. 7.

Huguely is accused of entering Love’s apartment and slamming her head into a wall. Authorities said Love, of Cockeysville, Md., died of trauma to the head. Huguely has been held in jail.

Bolton to play at Houston Dynamo

HOUSTON

Bolton will play a preseason charity game at Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo on July 20, becoming the fifth Premier League team to announce a North American tour.

Former Dynamo midfielder Stuart Holden is not likely to play on the tour. He is projected to be sidelined for six months following a left knee injury sustained in a tackle from Manchester United’s Jonny Evans on March 19.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Everton and Newcastle also have announced North American tours ahead of Premier League openers on Aug. 13. Bolton also had a U.S. tour last summer.
