Rally at YSU today to protest SB 5

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University students, in conjunction with community and labor-union leaders in the Mahoning Valley, plan a public rally against Senate Bill 5 and Gov. John Kasich’s proposed state budget at 5:30 p.m. today.

The event will be in Beeghly Center at YSU.

The Rally for Education and Community is designed for people concerned about education, public safety, jobs, families and children, organizers from the YSU chapter of Students for Social Justice say.

Speakers will include state Sen. Joe Schiavoni of Canfield, D-33rd; state Rep. Robert Hagan of Youngstown, D-60th; plus representatives of YSU-Ohio Education Association, the Youngstown NAACP and other student and community groups.

Gary Davenport, an organizer of the rally, said tables will be set up with information on training to distribute referendum petitions to repeal SB 5.

For more information on the rally, contact Davenport at gldavenport@student.ysu.edu or call 330-518-7037.

Crash kills woman

COLUMBIANA

A Wooster woman died in a single-vehicle crash on state Route 172 Saturday afternoon.

Erica Graham, 87, lost control of her Buick while heading westbound on state Route 172, veering off the right side of the road and hitting a tree just east of Zeppernick Lake.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Graham had been wearing a seat belt, and alcohol use was not suspected, officials said.

The Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating.

Due day for taxes

YOUNGSTOWN

Post offices in the Mahoning Valley do not plan extended hours tonight for mailing of state and federal income-tax returns.

Taxpayers had an extra weekend this year to file their income-tax returns because of a District of Columbia holiday. The deadline is midnight tonight.

For those mailing returns today, the postal service recommends filers mail early in the day at any post office or collection box. They also urge that those depositing returns in a collection box today double-check the pick-up schedule on the label of the box. To ensure getting the April 18 postmark, returns must be deposited before the last scheduled pick-up time.
