Pentagon inquiry clears McChrystal of wrongdoing

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Pentagon inquiry into a Rolling Stone magazine profile of Gen. Stanley McChrystal that led to his dismissal as commander of U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan has cleared him of wrongdoing.

The probe's results, released today, also called into question the accuracy of the magazine's report last June.

The office of the Defense Department inspector general said it reviewed an unpublished Army investigation of the case, and interviewed numerous eyewitnesses. It concluded that the evidence was insufficient to substantiate a violation of Pentagon standards by McChrystal or any of his staff.

Attempts to get comment from Rolling Stone weren't immediately successful.

The Pentagon inquiry also concluded that not all of the events at issue happened as reported in the article.
