A Girl Scouts group serving 40,000 girls in 18 northeast Ohio counties has decided to close five of its camps - including Camp Sugarbush in Trumbull County — to save money and fix up the remaining two.

Girl Scouts of North East Ohio says it will close and sell camps in Carroll, Lake, Seneca, Summit and Trumbull counties. Money from the sales will be used for improvements at the two most-used sites, Camp Ledgewood in Peninsula and Camp Timberlane in Wakeman, which will stay open.

A co-chairman of the organization’s property committee, Brent Gardner, told The Plain Dealer in Cleveland the move will help the group’s bottom line because it has spent about $1 million annually to subsidize the camps.

Some volunteers oppose the decision and question whether two camps are enough to serve the area.

Camp Sugarbush is located on state Route 88 in Kinsman.
