NEW CASTLE, Pa.
Eighty-eight people from 19 counties in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia attended a meeting last month at the Gettings Annex here in order to map current biking and walking trails in counties along the Ohio/Pennsylvania/West Virginia border.
The mapping is a prelude to planning how to improve and extend the network.
Doniele Andrus, greenways and environmental planner for the Lawrence County Planning Department, told county commissioners on Tuesday the next step will be a follow-up call she and others will participate in with the National Parks Service on Monday.
Andrus said the county hosted the meeting which grew out of discussions she had with the Rails to Trails Conservancy, the National Parks Service and other groups.
For trail-planning purposes, Lawrence is grouped with Trumbull and Mahoning counties in Ohio and Mercer in Pennsylvania.
Current trails in Lawrence County are the Stavich Bike Trail, which runs from Union Township to Struthers, Ohio, and the North Country National Scenic Trail, which runs through Moraine and McConnell’s Mills state parks.
