Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading, at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County May 16 at 6:30 p.m.

Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome Bring a book of your choice.

Dogs are provided by K-9s for Compassion, registered Delta Society therapy dogs.

Guess and go at the library

Throughout the month of May, library guests at the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County can guess the number of items in a jar and win a prize if they have the closest guess.

Bond with your babies

The Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is hosting “Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books” for babies 6-23 months May 9 at 10 a.m.

The event includes developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.

This program is available for children ages 2 and 3 Tuesdays in May at 10 a.m. and for children ages 4 and 5 Tuesdays in May at 1:30 p.m.

Boy Scouts to host pasta dinner

A pasta dinner, sponsored by Boy Scouts Troop 115 of St. Michael’s Parish, will be Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at St. Michael’s Church, 281 Glenview Drive in Canfield.

The meal includes all-you-can-eat pasta, meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and a beverage.

Carry out is also available. A basket raffle will also be available.

Tickets are $7 for adults; $3 for ages 6-12 and children 5 years and under are free.

Advanced tickets can be purchased from any member of Troop 115 or are available at the door.

Proceeds from the dinner help the scouts raise funds for camp.

Help Canfield recycle

Canfield residents are encouraged to set out their recyclable materials the week of April 24.

Curbside Recycling service is every other week. Use your curbside bins or an old laundry basket, cardboard box, or container that is uncovered. If you have more than three bins, the remainder should be taken to one of Canfield’s drop-off sites.

Curbside pick-up is free and bins are free to Curbside Community residents living in single-family homes.

Materials to recycle are: plastics (No. 1-7), glass jars and bottles, all food and beverage cans, magazines, shredded paper, phone books, junk mail and catalogs and plastic bags.

Enroll early at Summit Academy

Summit Academy in Youngstown is accepting applications for enrollment for the 2011-2012 school year for kindergarten through eighth grade.

Enrollment packets can be picked up at the school’s office at 144 N. Schenley Ave.

See VineSong at the Church of Rock

VineSong, an international worship ministry team, will be hosted by The Church of Rock, 7025 Luteran Lane, April 29 at 7 p.m.

The team is on its annual United States tour and will lead a worship on the steps of the U.S. Capitol at the National Day of Prayer event.

Earth Day energy exam

Earth Day is Friday. Stop by the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County throughout the month of April to take the Energy Exam.

Know about nesting habits

The Audubon Society Mahoning Valley will host “Nesting Habits of North American Birds” April 26 at 7 p.m. at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on state Route 46 in Canfield.

Participants will learn about the different kinds of nests that birds make and use.

Grab stuff at the Gigantic Garage Sale

Angels for Animals will host its 17th annual Gigantic Garage Sale April 29 through May 1 at the Canfield Fairgrounds. Admission is $5 on April 29 from 10 a.m. to noon and $1 on April 29 from noon to 7 p.m. and April 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On May 1, admission is free with half price on most items from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. wristbands will be sold for $5 and $10 to take anything until it’s gone. No strollers, wagons or dogs will be permitted in the sale buildings.

Garage sale donations will be accepted April 25-27 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the main gate of the fairgrounds. Clean, usable items will be accepted. No refrigerators, stoves, large appliances, console televisions, encyclopedias, tires, artificial Christmas trees, or mattresses and box springs will be accepted.

Monies raised will benefit homeless animals and low cost spay/neuter programs. For information, call 330-549-1111, extension 330.

Eat ice cream with the Easter Bunny

Visit the Easter Bunny April 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cornersburg Dairy Queen, 3555 S. Meridian Road. Free candy-filled eggs and a live bunny display will be available.

Band rehearsals open to the community

Musicians from the Valley are welcome to attend rehearsals with the Canfield Community Concert Band. The band meets every Tuesday evening at Canfield High School.

Anagram contest

Children of all ages can unscramble the letters to find Easter words in the Canfield branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County’s anagram contest throughout the month of April during regular library hours.

Help clean up America

Individuals, neighborhoods, civic groups, youth groups, garden clubs, athletic teams and businesses in Canfield are encouraged to join in the Keep the Mahoning Valley Beautiful annual cleanup through May 31.

The Mahoning County Green Team will supply the vests, bags, gloves, release forms and other clean-up materials. Cleanups must be conducted on public lands only, such as vacant lots, streets, stretches of highway, medians, parks or waterfronts.

St. Elizabeth’s hosts May golf outing

St. Elizabeth Health Center will host its fourth annual Trauma Service Golf Outing May 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $75 per single player or $300 per foursome and includes golf, cart, prizes and food. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Local student earns distinct position

Canfield’s Dana Dickey was recently chosen to serve as the secretary of the Youngstown State University Chapter of Sigma Alpha Lambda.

MCCTC offering salon appointments to public

The Cosmetology students at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are now offering afternoon hours at their salon to the public.

Afternoon appointments are available starting at noon.

All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $6.

Services include haircuts, hairstyles, perms, relaxers, facials, hair removal, hair color and manicures.

The salon will be open now until May by appointment only.

Enjoy yoga every Tuesday

Get a rigorous workout and experience peace in the hectic world doing ashtanga yoga with Kirk every Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Unity Centre for Spiritual Living, 1226 Naylor-Lloyd Road in Liberty.

Bring a mat and small blanket to learn a blend of energizing yoga styles from Heidi Suraci at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout April.

Tuesdays will feature beginners’ classes from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and intermediate classes from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Thursday classes will be from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and are open to all levels.

T’ai Chi in the garden

Ease stress, improve health and increase vitality with breathing exercises and selected movements from a classic Chen T’ai Chi form taught by Marie Lew Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. throughout April at Fellows Riverside Gardens.
