Boardman track girls second at Lakeview Relays


The Boardman High School girls track team had its best showing of the season and finished second with 84 points at the Lakeview Relays April 8. Poland won the meet with 108.

“I was really pleased with the girls’ efforts in what has become the norm for this season, inclement weather,” said Boardman girls coach Denise Gorski. “It was cold, drizzling and very muddy and yet the girls competed very hard and were very supportive of each other. They gained some confidence with their second-place finish in the meet and the relay meets are always a lot of fun.”

The Spartans were led by five relays that placed first in their respective events. The high jump relay consisting of freshman Morgan Hambrick, junior Jenny Bresnahan and sophomore Brittany Bailing placed first with a combined total of 13-3. Hambrick had the second-best jump of the meet at 4-9, Bresnahan had the third-best jump in the meet of 4-6 and Bailing had the eighth overall best jump at 4 feet.

The shot put relay team placed first with a combined total of 83-8. Sophomore Daisy Robinson led the way with a throw of 30-9 Ω, which was also the second-best throw in the competition. Sophomore Katrina Watkins threw 26-6 and was fifth overall and freshman Allysia Milligan threw 26-5 Ω to finish sixth.

The 4X100-meter relay team placed first with a season-best time of 53.29 and consisted of freshmen Nikki Hillard and Morgan Hambrick, junior Lesley Koch and senior Nicole Vlad. The 4X400-meter relay team also finished first, running 4:29.77 on the legs of sophomore Christina Claybrook, sophomore Sydni Ogilive, junior Tori Moore and senior Carissa Plourde.

The distance medley team also won its event in a time of 13:47.53 and was made up of Plourde, Claybrook, Ogilvie and Moore.

The 4X200 relay team placed second with a time of 1:54.25 and consisted of Hillard, Koch, sophomore Julia Barnett and Moore. The 4X1600-meter relay team placed third with a time of 25:32.4 and consisted of sophomores Daisy Corso, Kaitlyn Emery, Audrey Keleman and freshman Breanna Gatte.

The long jump relay team placed third and was led by Carissa Plourde, jumping 12-11 æ, good enough for third overall. Julia Barnett jumped 12-2, sixth overall, and Christina Claybrook jumped 11-8, 10th overall in the competition.

Three events placed fourth in the competition, including the 4X800 relay, the shuttle hurdle relay and the discus relay. The 4X800 relay team ran 11:18.91 and included Corso, Emery and sophomores Toni Triglia and Sarina Mauerman. The shuttle hurdle relay team ran 1:14.55 to place fourth and included Vlad, Hambrick, freshman Gianna Napoli and Claybrook.

In the discus relay, the team placed fourth with a combined throw total of 197-0. Daisy Robinson threw 99-0 to place first overall in the competition and Katrina Watkins threw a career-best of 98-0 and was second overall in the competition. The sprint medley team ran 2:09.40 to place fifth and included Hillard, Koch, Barnett and freshman Brandi Gatte.
