Friends of the Library to preserve memories

The Friends of the Library is hosting its next meeting at the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning Valley May 9 at 9:30 a.m.

Dr. Sherry Linkon from the Department of Working Class Studies at Youngstown State University will present “Preserving Family Memories.”

Free blood pressure screenings at library

The Mahoning County Chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting a blood pressure screening at the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County May 2 from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Web site building workshop at library

From start to finish, learn how to set up and build out a Web site, including free or nearly-free options for software, hosting, design and visitor tracking May 23 at the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County at 6:30 p.m.

Geared towards small businesses and organizations, the workshop will cover the following: software that allows you to create Web pages and blog posts for free, what free Web templates are available, what are the trade-offs between free and cheap hosting, what you need to know about buying a domain name, how to track visitors to a site, how to submit a site to Google and how to see which searches a site appears in.

TAB meeting scheduled

The monthly Teen Advisory Board meeting is scheduled for May 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Newcomers are always welcome.

Experience the story of Easter

Good Hope Lutheran Church, 98 Homestead Drive, will host Easter in an Eggshell today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is hosting a “paper” maze throughout the month of May.

Try “paper” maze and get a bookmark and an entry for the prize drawing. There will be a different maze each week.

Bond with your babies

The Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is hosting “Baby Brilliant: Bonding with Babies and Books” for babies 6-23 months May 5 at 10 a.m.

The event includes developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child become a successful reader.

This program is available for children ages 2 and 3 Wednesdays in May at 10 a.m. and for children ages 4 and 5 Tuesdays in May at 10 a.m.

Buy books at annual sale

Westminster Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Dr., will host its 55th annual used book sale from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 27 and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 28-29.

A large collection of books and music in all categories will be available.

Monies raised will be used for local and worldwide mission projects. Unsold books will be given to the Green Team for recycling.

It’s in the stars

Teen is grades seven through 12 test your knowledge of astrology by matching personality traits to their astrological sign at the Boardman branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County throughout the month of May.

The winner will receive a sweet treat.

Relax with yoga at the library

The Boardman branch of the public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County will host a yoga class for children and their parents Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Wear comfortable clothes so that you can bend and stretch and reach for the stars. The program lasts 45 minutes.

See VineSong at the Church of Rock

VineSong, an international worship ministry team, will be hosted by The Church of Rock, 7025 Luteran Lane, April 29 at 7 p.m.

The team is on its annual United States tour and will lead a worship on the steps of the U.S. Capitol at the National Day of Prayer event.

Grab stuff at the Gigantic Garage Sale

Angels for Animals will host its 17th annual Gigantic Garage Sale April 29 through May 1 at the Canfield Fairgrounds.

Admission is $5 on April 29 from 10 a.m. to noon and $1 on April 29 from noon to 7 p.m. and April 30 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

On May 1, admission is free with half price on most items from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. wristbands will be sold for $5 and $10 to take anything until it’s gone.

No strollers, wagons or dogs will be permitted in the sale buildings.

Garage sale donations will be accepted April 25-27 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the main gate of the fairgrounds. Clean, usable items will be accepted. No refrigerators, stoves, large appliances, console televisions, encyclopedias, tires, artificial Christmas trees, or mattresses and box springs will be accepted.

Know about nesting habits

The Audubon Society Mahoning Valley will host “Nesting Habits of North American Birds” April 26 at 7 p.m. at Mill Creek MetroParks Farm on state Route 46 in Canfield.

Participants will learn about the different kinds of nests that birds make and use.

L. Calvin Jones gives grant

Mark Zeidenstein, secretary and treasurer for L. Calvin Jones, received the Agency Hands in the Community grant award for his commitment to volunteerism.

L. Calvin Jones secured a $1000 grant for Goodwill Industries.

Goodwill Industries has suffered with cuts in funding and is in desperate need of cash donations, clothing and household goods.

The grant program recognizes Encompass/Allstate insurance agents for outstanding community service with a $1,000 donation to a charitable organization.

St. Elizabeth’s hosts May golf outing

St. Elizabeth Health Center will host its fourth annual Trauma Service Golf Outing May 22 at Pine Lakes Golf Course in Hubbard.

Registration will begin at 7 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. The cost is $75 per single player or $300 per foursome and includes golf, cart, prizes and food. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Registration deadline is May 12. The event will support trauma center outreach and injury prevention programs.

MCCTC offering salon appointments to public

The Cosmetology students at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center are now offering afternoon hours at their salon to the public.

Afternoon appointments are available starting at noon.

All services are performed by students under the supervision of their instructor and prices start at just $6.

Services include haircuts, hairstyles, perms, relaxers, facials, hair removal, hair color and manicures.

The salon will be open now until May by appointment only.

Bring a mat and small blanket to learn a blend of energizing yoga styles from Heidi Suraci at Fellows Riverside Gardens on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout April.
