The transition from middle school to high school can be difficult. Classes get harder, responsibilities get bigger and many incoming freshmen want all the advice they can get.

Canfield High School’s Young Leaders were ready and willing to share their perspective when they visited Canfield Village Middle School April 8 to speak to the eighth-grade students about what to expect this fall.

The 35 volunteers addressed everything from block scheduling to clubs to the dress code. They told the students to get involved in schoolwork and extracurricular activities.

“It helps them dispel fears about high school and learn to acclimate to the new environment,” said Young Leaders club adviser and guidance counselor Margaret Stephens.

Young Leaders is a service- and leadership-oriented club. Members can help out in the community by volunteering in a number of activities. Some, like the middle school visit, involve helping other students.

“It puts them in a leadership role,” said Stephens. “It makes them role models.”
