Austintown Fitch softball squad led by dynamic duo

The Fitch girls softball team graduated five talented seniors last season – a group that had a tremendous impact on the program during their stay the past four seasons.
“It’s a new year and a new team, but the same confidence,” returning senior Amanda Callahan stated.
Coach Melody Rice notes that her team is very anxious to get on their new field at 9-11 Memorial Park.
“We have six returning lettermen and along with an excellent blend of newcomers, I feel that mix will allow us to be very competitive in this our last year in the Federal League,” Rice stated.
Next year, Austintown Fitch will become members of the All-American Conference so the drive and desire is there for senior leaders and best friends; Amanda Callahan and Carly Ortz.
“Amanda [Callahan] and Carly [Ortz] have played together since their Little League days and have been our solid pitcher/catcher combo for the past four years,” Rice said.
Callahan is expected to carry the team defensively as she is slated to be the Falcons’ starting pitcher, while Rice said Ortz has the strongest arm in the state behind the plate.
Junior Megan Carney is someone to look out for as she will step back into the lineup this season after an ACL injury forced her to the sidelines her entire sophomore campaign.
Junior Tori Wise will have a more pivotal role this year, stepping in as first baseman and pitcher. Junior Brianna Banko will return to the outfield and is a consistent .300 hitter.
Sophomore Alana Callahan will enjoy playing alongside her sister, Amanda, one last time with newcomers Marissa Mraz (junior) and Mckinzee Barnes (sophomore) expected to see playing time.
Freshmen Alex Corradi and Cali Mikovich are set to lock down the middle part of the infield.
Mercedes Pratt, Christine Holmes, Kaitlyn Pugh, Marie Bishop, Mariah Defuria and Miranda Defuria add much needed depth.
Last season was the Falcons’ first winning season since 2005.
“The girls have gotten a taste of winning and now they want more. Simply put, our season goals are to be in the top half of the Federal League and make it to the district title game. Simple goals stated – hard to achieve, however,” Rice added.
