EU fines Unilever, P&G for price-fixing

BRUSSELS

European Union regulators have fined consumer products makers Procter & Gamble and Unilever the equivalent of $456 million for fixing prices of powdered laundry detergent together with the Henkel company in eight EU countries.

The three companies are the leading producers of washing powder in Europe. The EU says the cartel was started when the firms were in joint talks on how to cut down on packaging.

Cincinnati-based P&G has to pay $306 million. The company says the fine was not a surprise, and it already had put away money for it in recent earnings reports.

Spokesman Paul Fox says Procter & Gamble already has taken the appropriate internal action and has strengthened its global compliance program.

Gov’t targets ring infecting computers

WASHINGTON

The FBI and the Justice Department on Wednesday began dismantling a ring of international computer thieves who stole hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide by infecting over 2.3 million computers with malicious software.

FBI officials said investigators were able to execute a digital sting of their own — taking control of several of the malicious computer servers and sending commands to make them stop transferring pirated data.

Millions of dollars were stolen from U.S. computer users, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is continuing.

The investigators were trying to contain a malware program called Coreflood, which has been around for at least a decade and can record key strokes, allowing cyber criminals to take over unsuspecting computers and steal passwords, banking and credit card information.
