For safety reasons, YSU cuts down 10 trees on campus

YOUNGSTOWN — Ten trees along Lincoln Avenue at Youngstown State University have been cut down because the roots were buckling the sidewalk.

Ron Cole, YSU director of communications, said today the university received reports from individuals who tripped and fell because of the heaving sidewalk.

“In the best interest of safety of everyone, we decided to have the trees removed,” he said.

A sign posted next to where the trees grew says trees will be planted along the corridor, away from the sidewalk.

“We value our trees here. We love our trees,” Cole said. “We are a Tree City USA school.

During the last five years, 300 trees have been planted around campus, he added.
